LibreOffice - The Free Alternative Office Suite

Finally the long awaited enterprise ready version of LibreOffice 3.4.2 has arrived.

LibreOffice is a open-source personal productivity suite that gives you six feature-rich applications for all your document production and data processing needs: Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw, Math and Base. Support and documentation is free from our large, dedicated community of users, contributors and developers.

Make sure you visit LibreOffice Office Suite for more information and in order to download the new stable LibreOffice.

Alternatively, there's always the Debian Way:

$ apt-get install libreoffice

It’s available for Windows, Linux and Mac users and is quick and easy to download and install. There are many similarities to OpenOffice, so if you are used to working with OpenOffice you'll find it even easier to work with LibreOffice.

LibreOffice is said to have improved greatly since its forked off from OpenOffice, and also some of the major Linux distributions including Debian have LibreOffice in line to replace OpenOffice in future stable releases. You can use Debian Backports though to install LibreOffice also on a current stable Debian Squeeze 6.

You can also import PDF files, which is handy for editing, though it takes time. You can save word processing documents in a variety of formats, including different versions of Word.
