NAND Flash Spot Market 3Q 2007

We predict mostly stable price development with a major price re-shuffle first after Christmas and prior to Chinese New Year.

After a slight, but more short tempered increase of purchase prices for USB flash memory in connection with the Canton Fair prices have dropped slightly as many players have now recovered and also learned from the “big price crashes” in April and August this year when contract orders from mainly Apple drained up major NAND flash memory production capacities by strong contractual chip purchases. The top buyers on the spot market for NAND flash memory in Hong Kong and Shenzhen have further secured off their own Christmas supplies by starting to stock up their flash memory already end of August and beginning of September this year. Most main players on the market, mostly Hong Kong companies and Chinese manufactures of USB flash drives and promotional USB products, have learned and are better prepared to handle the Christmas sales this year.

By releasing freshly purchased flash memory in a healthy mixture with already stocked up units they are able to buffer of a big part of the risks of this volatile market for NAND flash memory used for customized USB flash drives. Odd price exceptions keep on occurring though, such as a sudden price jump of the best-selling 1GB Hynix flash memory chip here two weeks ago. Due to buffering by using stocked up flash chips most manufacturers where only affected a short time before prices went back to normal.
